Stachytarpheta frantzii, a native of Monteverde, occurs from 200 to 1,300m and can be found anywhere from Mexico to South America.
This shrub or small tree is characteristically known for its 45cm inflorescences that have five-lobed, purple flowers with a narrow tube light lilac or whitish in the throat. They are great for attracting short-billed hummingbirds and butterflies. It flowers and fruits year-round and is an evergreen.
It is easily propagated from cuttings and is more often seen in cultivation, making it a great candidate for native-species landscaping.
